The most convenient cycling route between the Maarjamõisa and Delta study buildings

The City of Tartu, University of Tartu and Tartu Urban Cyclists Society have selected the safest and most convenient cycling route between the Maarjamõisa study buildings, Vanemuise 46 and the Delta study building. The route also passes the University of Tartu Library.

The route takes the cyclists from the Delta Centre along Narva mnt Street, across Kaarsild (the Arch Bridge), and through the Central Park to Vanemuise Street. At the end of the street, it turns into Vaksali Street and follows it to the railway overpass, and then continues along Riia Street to L. Puusepa Street, to Tartu University Hospital, Biomedicum, Chemicum, Physicum and the Institute of Technology. Check out the route and the locations of the Tartu Smart Bike Share stations on the Google Maps app: The Tartu Urban Cyclists Society helped map the route. Future plans include marking the route with signs.

The University of Tartu 2023 mobility survey showed that 17.2% of the bird’s eye distances travelled between study buildings in the autumn semester of 2022 were longer than 1 km and remained within half an hour. The most convenient cycling route between the Maarjamõisa and Delta study buildings makes up almost a third of the distances. As it is best to cycle this distance in spring and autumn, the university and the city decided to choose the most suitable route.

Bicycle parking and Tartu Smart Bike Share

You can find bike racks for parking your bicycle next to the university buildings. In total, there are around 2,400 bike racks outside the university buildings, of which 1,410 are covered. You can get an overview of bike parking in the university's virtual tour by clicking on the bicycle icon on the building's exterior image. In addition to information on parking options, you can also see photos of all the bike racks.

Tartu has a bike rental system called Tartu Smart Bike Share which allows you to choose a sustainable mode of transport for commuting. Both conventional and electric bikes are provided. The latter can be rented during the warm season, the conventional bicycles are available all year round. You can use the Tartu Smart Bike Share bikes at a time and place that suits you – there are a total of 100 bike-share stations across the city and in Tartu's surrounding municipalities. There is a discounted ticket for young people, as well as a joint membership for the Tartu public bus transport system and Tartu Smart Bike Share. Read more on the website of Tartu Smart Bike Share.
